After agreeing to establish a U.S. research and development operation in New Jersey last year, California-based Allergan, maker of wrinkle-fighting drug Botox and other medical devices, selected SJP Properties’ Somerset Corporate Center II building in Bridgewater, NJ, where the global pharmaceutical firm signed a 93,000-square-foot lease. According to SJP, the firm’s move to the five-building office park will inject as much as $12 million of private investment into the state’s economy, as well as create several hundred new jobs over the next few years.

The 250,000-square-foot building is located near Interstate 78 and Interstate 287 off routes 202/206. Other tenants include Juniper Networks, Qualcomm, Merrill Lynch, Aon Consulting, and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories. Landlord SJP was represented in-house in the transaction. Kurt Burdack, Carolyn Sica and Chip Wright of CBRE Group represented Allergan.

The firm is expected to qualify for a state business incentive grant worth up to $17 million over 10 years provided by the New Jersey Economic Development Authority. Company officials met with Governor Chris Christie last September in California before announcing their decision. “Working diligently to attract leading companies such as Allergan to New Jersey to improve our long-term economic prospects has been a top priority of mine since I took office,” the Governor said in a statement announcing Allergan’s selection.

Established more than 60 years ago as an eye care company, Allergan currently focuses on several medical specialties, including eye care, neurosciences, medical aesthetics, medical dermatology, obesity intervention and urologics.

The company has posted revenue growth for more than two years aided in part by surging sales of Botox. Earlier this month the firm reported a 45% increase in first-quarter earnings and double-digit sales growth at its specialty pharmaceuticals business. The company projected second-quarter results of earnings of $1.04 to $1.06 a share on revenue of $1.45 billion to $1.5 billion.

The company continues to seek additional approvals for new uses of its best-selling drug, including the treatment of overactive bladder and osteoporosis.

Allergan also has been pursuing a number of acquisitions. It most recently acquired Vicept Therapeutics, Inc., which developed a cream to treat the skin conndition rosacea. Allergan also has a deal with Map Pharmaceuticals Inc. to market Map’s experimental migraine treatment Levadex.

Sure, celebrities may have influenced the prevalence of Botox injections, wraps, peels and laser treatments. But these days, cosmetic procedures are not just for the rich and the famous.

Americans spent $10.7 billion on cosmetic procedures in 2010. About $6.6 billion of that was spent on surgery and the rest on nonsurgical procedures, skin rejuvenations and laser treatments, said Dr. James McAdoo of McAdoo Cosmetic Surgery in Rockford, Ill., citing the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

While Americans still appear to invest more in going under the knife, nonsurgical procedures are still more common than surgical. There are several treatments available to help soften or invigorate your look if you truly believe you’re aging before your time, without undergoing surgery, experts say.

“It’s fairly inexpensive to do these things versus going under the knife and spending $10,000 on a face-lift or more,” said Sarah Ramirez, an aesthetician with InnovaMed in Rockford.

Typically, Ramirez says she sees women getting into cosmetic procedures in their 40s.

“Any time you go under versus doing something non-invasive, the risks are a lot more. Nonsurgical procedures are temporary. If you don’t like it, it’s not permanent,” she said.

In order of popularity, the most frequent nonsurgical cosmetic procedures in 2010, according to ASAPS: botulism toxin A (Botox), hyluronic acid injection, laser hair removal, laser skin resurfacing and chemical pills. In addition, a decent amount of dough — $1.8 billion — was spent on skin rejuvenation treatments.

If you’re still reading this, it must mean you’re somewhat intrigued by the concept. McAdoo and Ramirez give us the basics on wrapping, peeling, filling and tightening below.

	Treatment types

What do all these treatments mean? A Botox injection tells the muscles to stop moving the skin so the skin doesn’t buckle and new skin cells fill in wrinkles. A collagen injection can create plumper lips or fill in lines, according to McAdoo.

Laser skin resurfacing or tightening causes the skin to contract and the surface texture to smooth with light heating up and vaporizing the skin evenly. Other laser treatments can get rid of pesky, unwanted hair or freckles and dark spots.

Then there are wraps, peels and microdermabrasion, all of which get rid of dead skin to create healthy, rejuvenated skin and can sometimes tighten, Ramirez says.

Another topical treatment, Beta 3 growth factor creams, train the skin to grow baby collagen instead of adult collagen.

	Clearing the air

We’ve all seen the reality shows and have heard the horror stories about our most beloved (or loathed) celebrities. So what’s the truth about injections like Botox?

Take it from Ramirez: “Botox does not hurt. A lot of people are scared of needles, and you can hardly feel it. Some people are scared of Botox because you can have an unnatural look to your face, but that’s not true. Our goal is to enhance (your) natural look. … That’s why with plastic surgery, you can tell.”

	Be selective, look for skill

Seek out a plastic surgeon trained in injections and nonsurgical procedures, and those with a plastic surgery residency.

Also, know how many procedures the surgeon has done. McAdoo suggests a plastic surgeon should have thousands of patient injections under his or her belt and should be Board Certified in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery from the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery or the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Ramirez says to only work with a certified aesthetician on peels and other skin treatments. The best treatment centers will offer a free consultation.

Allergan, which makes Botox, will build a nearly $12 million research and development facility in Bridgewater, the company and the site’s owner, SJP Properties, announced yesterday.

Based in California, Allergan first said it was considering expanding in New Jersey in November, when it was awarded a $14.9 million grant from the New Jersey Economic Development Authority through the Business Employment Incentive Program.

The company has a smaller facility in Bedminster, where it employs 20 people. The new, 93,000-square-foot facility will bring nearly 400 new jobs to the state.

The company chose the site in New Jersey because of the local talent pool in the pharmaceutical and medical device industry, as well as its proximity to hospitals and universities, said spokeswoman Cathy Taylor.

“As a multispecialty health care company, a critical component to our business is the scientific innovation derived from the work of our RD facilities throughout the United States,” Taylor said. “The expansion of our facility in New Jersey will enable us to further enhance our product pipeline and advance our pursuit of novel medical therapies for patients.”

The facility will be part of SJP Properties’ Somerset Corporate Center campus, a series of energy-efficient office buildings in Bridgewater. Allergan’s new neighbors include Juniper Networks, Qualcomm, Merrill Lynch, Aon Consulting and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, SJP said in a statement.

Gov. Chris Christie heralded the news and said attracting companies to New Jersey is one of his administration’s main goals.

“Allergan’s decision to expand its operations in New Jersey will create hundreds of high-quality jobs and is proof that the pro-business policies of this administration are helping to attract and retain both large and small businesses here in the state,” said Christie. “Working diligently to attract leading companies such as Allergan to New Jersey to improve our long-term economic prospects has been a top priority of mine since I took office.”

Allergan is a global company with a presence in more than 100 countries. It focuses on several medical specialties, and also manufactures Restasis and the Lap-Band used in gastric surgery.

John Mayer is still waiting for his singing voice to return after his damaged vocal cords were frozen – twice.

The Daughters singer, who possesses one of the most distinctive voices in music, was forced to cancel tour dates and recording commitments earlier this year after learning he’d have to have a second Botox shot into his throat because the first didn’t work.

Mayer admits she’s still without much of a singing voice, but that hasn’t stopped him writing hits – and now he thinks he might just stay away from the microphone.

He says, “I can’t sing so I’m writing.”

And talking about his throat problems, he tells U.S. TV chat show host Ellen DeGeneres, “It’s not a health concern whatsoever but it has taken me out of singing. I tried to beat it the first time and couldn’t. What they actually do is they cut this thing out of your throat and then they inject your vocal cords with Botox, which freezes your vocal cords so that this thing can heal without smacking up against the other side. I just need more Botox next time.

“So I got to do it all over again, get more Botox, which kind of paralyses the vocal cord for longer. I’m very happy to be a writer, really lucky to be a write.”

Ellen

John Mayer can speak again! The talented guitarist, whose vocal problems forced him to cancel his spring tour and led him to record instrumental covers of Lana Del Rey songs, visited ‘Ellen’ today to chat about his new album ‘Born and Raised’ and his recent Botox injections — in his vocal cords, not his face.

Mayer elaborated on the theme of his recent single and video ‘Shadow Days,’ where he sings about maturing. He told Ellen about moving past the infamous 2010 Playboy interview that created an uproar for its sexually- and racially-charged language. “I lost my head for awhile,” Mayer acknowledged. “I did a couple of dumb interviews, and that kind of woke me up… It sort of rocketed me into adulthood. It was a violent crash into being an adult.”

Part of growing up meant moving to Bozeman, Montana, which the singer did on a whim after enjoying the area during a road trip with friends. The move was all about being happy, he explained. “You get to a certain age where you prepare yourself for happiness, but sometimes you never remember to actually get happy. I remembered how to get happy.”

Botox could be used to help treat people who suffer from chronic migraines, a report in London found Friday.

The injections, most commonly known as an anti-wrinkle treatment, were shown to relieve pain for people who suffer from the severe and debilitating headaches.

In a draft report, the British National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommended that the injections should be used as a treatment for the condition.

If there are no objections to the report, the treatment could be made available on Britain’s National Health Service within months.

Professor Carole Longson, director of the Health Technology Evaluation Centre at NICE, said, “Chronic migraines are extremely debilitating and can significantly affect a person’s quality of life. We are pleased that the committee has been able to recommend Botox as a preventative therapy for those adults whose headaches have not improved despite trying at least three other medications and whose headaches are not caused by medication overuse.”

It is thought that Botox may help with migraines by blocking pain signals, as well as by making muscles relax.

Dr. Giles Elrington, from the National Migraine Centre, said that the success rate proves the injections can have far wider benefits than just erasing wrinkles.

“Botox is mostly used to cause partial muscle paralysis, and that’s why it works for wrinkles, spasms and stiffness. It’s not just a treatment for ladies who lunch,” Elrington said. “The funny thing about Botox and migraine is that it’s working on sensory pathways, and what it does is not cause muscle paralysis but reduce the sensory traffic coming from the head through to consciousness.”
