Jaw Reshaping With Botox Injections
One of the cosmetic uses of botox injections is jaw reshaping. If you look around you, you will see quite a few persons with a prominent lower jaw bone at the angle of the jaw, causing the face to appear square and bulldog-like when seen from the front. Not a very pleasant appearance, especially for a woman. There are various causes of this square facial shape.
1. Bony development of the lower jaw bone or mandible.
2. Fat deposition on the lower jaw
3. Ageing with sagging of the cheeks to the lower jaw
4. Overdevelopment of the muscle of the lower jaw, principally the masseter muscle. This overdevelopment is usually due to overuse of the jaw in chewing, such as in chewing tough foods periodically and over long periods of time. Sometimes it is related to grinding of the jaw at night.
It is the 4th cause which we are concerned about here, and it can be quite easily treated. In this procedure known as jaw reshaping, a dose of about 30 to 50 units of botox injections are placed into the masseter muscles in strategic places on each side of the jaw. This results in a weakening and subsequent shrinking of the muscle on each side, leading to the formation of a more streamlined esthetically acceptable pear-shaped face. Jaw reshaping is a more commonly done procedure in the Asian community, which views the pear-shaped face as more pleasant.
Results of the botox injections are visible in about 1 month and lasts up to a year, or longer, depending on the chewing habits of the patient.
