How does Botox work?

Botox has risen in popularity over recent years as a cosmetic treatment to remove unwanted wrinkles from a person’s face.

How do the injections work?

According to the Mayo Clinic, Botox cosmetic injections temporarily relax the facial muscles that cause wrinkles to make the lines less noticeable. Popular areas for Botox treatments include frown lines between the eyebrows, crow’s feet and the forehead furrow.

The Mayo Clinic states that Botox is not an effective solution for wrinkles caused by sun damage or to treat the lines around your mouth, as muscles in that area are needed for talking and eating.

According to the Mayo Clinic, Botox injections are fairly safe if administered by a qualified professional. However, there are some side effects that can occur. These include: pain and bruising at the injection spot, redness, itching, headache, nausea, and temporary muscle weakness.

If you experience any severe side effects after an injection (including: trouble breathing, vision problems, muscle weakness or loss of bladder control) you should consult your doctor right away.
